Water Damage FAQs

Does homeowners insurance cover water damage restoration?

Answer

Homeowners insurance may cover some water damage restoration, but coverage depends on the policy, the cause of the loss, exclusions, maintenance history, and the circumstances of the claim. Sudden accidental water damage may be treated differently from gradual leaks, deferred maintenance, flooding, groundwater, or other excluded causes.

The homeowner should promptly document visible damage, take reasonable steps to prevent further loss when safe, and contact the insurer for policy-specific guidance. A contractor can document the visible reconstruction scope, but cannot guarantee coverage or make the carrier’s claim decision. Westpeak prepares repair scopes for interior reconstruction after affected areas are ready to rebuild, including drywall, paint, flooring, cabinets, and trim. Our water damage reconstruction page explains how repair estimates and insurance-related scopes can differ.
